Whisky Advent Calendar day 23 : Glenfiddich 18 years old

Second to last day before Christmas, I name December the 23rd.

And today we have some Glenfiddich, a distillery that has quite a “bad” reputation among whisky lovers for their supposedly “basic malts”.

I admit I shared this view until a recent tasting organised for “Le Cercle Glenfiddich” at the prestigious hotel “Le Meurice” in Paris, where we only tasted and rediscovered the standard range (ie. without any single cask or limited edition).

Passed the initial disappointment at the discovery of the available bottles for the tasting, I have to admit I quickly changed my mind and that their “standard” offering actually pleased me and changed the bad and misguided perception I had of it. This was quite a memorable and pleasant tasting, both taste buds wise and social wise (wasn’t it Greg ?).

A special mention to the 15 years old distiller’s editions that had been specially chilled / frozen to go with some awesome dessert. What a discovery it was ! Makes me remember to buy one and put it in the freezer to surprise some friends with :-)

So here we go, Glenfiddich 18 years old, and I’m pretty sure I will like it as I did last time.

Name: Glenfiddich 18 years old
Owner: William Grant & Sons
Distillery: Glenfiddich
Region: Speyside
Type: Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Age: 18 years old
ABV: 40%
Bottle size: 3cl

Colour: Amber

Nose: Rich and elegant. It starts on nice honey next to poached peaches, pears and tarte tatin. Later on, we have some pineapples, grapes, plums and some faint cinnamon. Sweet and gorgeous nose. Really balanced and complex.

Palate: Oily. Stay on the same elegance as the nose. Begins with some banana, light pepper, licorice. Dark chocolate then appears followed by burnt caramel, peaches, grapes, plums and oranges.

Finish: Medium on grapes, lemon zest and oranges.

Overall: Not a perfect dram (does that exist ?), but that's damn well good and awesome ! Now, if we could have this at 46% at least, I would sign up immediately ;-)
